Graduate Showcase-Anna McKenna

1. Where are you from?

I am from Salina, Kansas.

2.What was the defining moment in you choosing to attend cosmetology school?

I always knew I wanted to attend cosmetology school, but my parents wanted me to “get the college experience first”. I went on from high school to attend Emporia State University knowing I wanted to pursue a career working with people.

3.What fears did you have and how did you overcome them?

The stereotypical image of a small town cosmetologist, working in a shop and not making any money. Being viewed as a professional is especially challenging in this industry. It was a huge leap of faith going into beauty industry without much support from anyone in my life. I was determined to succeed and show people that it is possible to do what you love and not just punching a time card.

4.What were some of your favorite aspects of Hays Academy of Hair Design and your time in school?

While in school at Hays Academy of Hair Design I loved when educators would come into the salon and we would learn from them as artists, theory and hands on. I also loved the Nuts and Bolts Business Program as well because it gave me a head start on understanding the money side of the industry and how not to sell myself short.

5. Where are you working now?

I currently work at The Hair Loft in Salina, KS. I started in the associates program immediately after graduation from Hays Academy.

6.How long have you been there?

The Hair Loft just under 4 years ago.

7.Are you happy with your decision to enter this wonderful industry?

I do not have the words to describe what joining this incredible industry has done for me not only as an artist, but as a person. In the beginning of my career of becoming a stylist, there was a lot of blood, sweat and tears. There were even days I thought I wasn’t good enough. As of today I truly believe I am changing lives one hair appointment at a time.

8.What career goals do you have and what are your plans to achieve them?

I have many goals in this career for myself, big and small. I hold myself to a high standard from advanced education to my personal life. One long term goal I keep in the back of my mind would be to travel whenever, wherever for however long and know my guests are taken care of while being worry free and will be here when I return.
