How to Avoid Test Anxiety

It is estimated that 1/3 of all students in post-secondary education suffer from anxiety over testing. The fear of failure, not measuring up to your standards, and the thought of being underprepared are a few examples of real-life fears many students experience in schools across the country. At Hays Academy of Hair Design in Salina and Hays, Kansas we strive to provide our students with additional resources while promoting positive study habits to combat these stressors. We understand that the expansive education we provide can be tough. It is our hope that with these resources and tips, our students can establish a positive mindset around testing.

Seek additional resources from your student services person.
We have an online study resource students receive upon starting school. This online program allows students to take pre-tests for each chapter covered from the textbook as many times as they would like from their smartphone, tablet or computer. The link is provided to all students via a Facebook page that is accessible only by students and staff of Hays Academy of Hair Design. In addition to the online study resource, students are given tips for apps that provide flashcards for each chapter of the book that can be studied to gain a better understanding of key principles and vocabulary words that are important to comprehend before testing.

Find a study buddy.
Having someone or a group of fellow students who will hold you accountable to studying is a great way to not only gain the information needed for upcoming tests, but also allows you to build strong relationships with your classmates.

Designate time each day to study.
Not only is it important to read the chapter of material being tested, but one should really make a daily commitment to reviewing the material. For some, taking notes as they read allows them to create a list of highlights from each chapter to focus on. For others, listing areas they feel they struggle in allows them to return to that information time and time again until they comprehend the concept being investigated.

Complete all homework and study guides on time.
Often, instructors at Hays Academy of Hair Design will go over any homework or study guides in class. Ensuring your work is done and on time facilitates a student’s ability to highlight or underline parts that teachers stress are most important prior to the test.

Make the school aware if you have an IEP.
Having an IEP that is current (within the last 3 years) and getting it approved by the State Board of Cosmetology’s testing company allow you to have accommodations made for taking written exams. These accommodations are made on a case-by-case basis and in accordance to the recommendations on each specific IEP.

Be confident in your ability.
If you have prepared well, read the chapter, taken online pre-tests and studied notes and flashcards, you have demonstrated diligence and tact! Take comfort in the fact that you are well prepared. Confidence is key!
