One of my true passions in life is also reading. As a young child and teenager I hated it! However as I’ve gotten older its one of the several things that brings me joy. There is just something comforting about having a book in hand whether I’m at home relaxing, on an airplane, in a waiting room of a dr’s office or sitting on a beautiful beach.
Reading provides one thing in life that can NEVER be taken away….knowle dge. I read a quote one time that said, “If you want to be more powerful, educate yourself. It is that simple.” I love that quote because I believe too often we rely on everyone else to feed our minds when simply th
e tools are all around to help us succeed on our own if we just search. I do not believe in the phrase “knowledge=power”. I do however believe in order to have wisdom you have to have knowledge. Therefore I believe more in “wisdom=power”.
The other night I went downstairs to my collection of books that is now starting to look like a small library and pondered a few things. Several people have asked me, “Why don’t you just purchase your reading material online?” For me personally I love the feel of a book in my hands, I love to look at my collection and remember what each one has taught me and the hope and wisdom in hard times it has brought into my life. It help I think honestly if our house was ever destroyed by a natural disaster those books would be the one thing I would probably miss the most!
I would love to share the ones in my collection that have had the most impact on my life and why:
Jesus Calling by Sarah Young
This book is a daily devotional book that I read every morning. It has been a book that has provided me with peace in the midst of many storms.
The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren
I’ve read this book and also participated in a small group study. This book helped me look a little deeper into myself to help me figure out my true purpose and calling in this lifetime.
The 5 Levels of Leadership by John Maxwell
This book helped me understand where I’m at as a leader to not only our staff but also our students and how to become better. This book helped me realize that I want people to follow me because they want to not because they have to!
The One Minute Manager by Kenneth Blanchard
This book is an easy read but quite effective. It taught be how easy goal setting, praisings, and reprimands can be. And yes it really does only take one minute!
How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie
In any business, relationship, organization, etc it really is about influencing people in the right way and this book will give you practical steps to do it.
Daring Greatly by Brene Brown
This book taught me all about the power of vulnerability which is an area that I suck at! I learned that when I feel vulnerable I also feel weak yet when we allow ourselves to be vulnerable others view us as having courage. So this is currently an area I’m working on. GREAT READ!
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
A short read but powerful! This book is a journey about a young boy fulfilling his personal legend….and we ALL have a personal legend but we ALL don’t fulfill it! Read this book and find out why!
The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle
Do you worry and have anxiety? This book helped me realize that most of my thoughts were about the past and the future and I was missing out on NOW….right now is all that we know for sure! The past is gone and the future isn’t here yet however so often those are the two places our minds always are!
The Joey Song by Sandy Swenson
Beautiful Boy by David Sheff
These two books provided me with many things; knowledge, hope, comfort, and understanding of a condition that affects 2/3 of families in the United States and over 23.5 million Americans…ADDICTION. A must read for anyone in the family unit of someone struggling with an addiction!
Lastly I want to encourage you to pick up a book today and start reading! Don’t make an excuse that you don’t have time….put down your cell phone (facebook, instagram, etc etc) and remote controls to video games and reality television and start filling your mind with usefull information!! Your brain will thank you for it!!
