1.Where are you from?
WaKeeney, Kansas
2.What was the defining moment in you choosing to attend cosmetology school?
You know I tell people all the time, I was working inside the industry at Hays Academy and I loved the people I worked with and the industry I was in, but I was not in love with my job. In my two years of working there I heard Danielle Markley (one of the owners of HAHD) tell the students many times, if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life. That thought was in the back of my head more often than not. Shortly before I made the decision to attend hair school, my sister and her husband, and one of my best friends I was living with all decided to better their own lives personally and financially by moving away from Hays. Honestly, at the time of them all moving away, I felt lost and was struggling to find myself and create my own happiness. It was then that I decided I needed to do something for myself and time to not rely on every one else to create my happiness! I had always enjoyed playing with hair as well as makeup so I knew I couldn’t go wrong by attending HAHD!
3.What fears did you have and how did you overcome them?
Oh my goodness. Well, if I said money wasn’t my number one fear going into school and coming out I would be lying. And if I didn’t say not being “good enough” or succeeding in my own eyes wasn’t another big fear I’d be fibbing to you too!
I told myself when I got on the floor in hair school, be the BEST! Set yourself apart from others so people want to come to you! So I began to post on my social media pages to let people know what I was doing, what I could do, what I offered… but not just with words. With PHOTOS! Shortly after I became religious to posting my work, I got busier and busier! It was such an awesome feeling. I didn’t want to be setting around because I knew when I got out of school, sitting around equaled no money! No, it’s not all about money of course, but I knew I wanted to be financially successful for myself!
When I think about what defines my success, I think about my clients. My goal to become and stay successful started out and is still to take care of each of my clients while they are in my chair for that hour or two! If they leave my chair happy and feeling beautiful, I’ve done my job and passed the success test! I’ve read many times, the biggest compliment you can give a hair dresser is a referral and I would say that is 100% true, because it never fails when a new client calls and mentions that one of my current clients told them to come to me, I can’t help but to think YES, I am doing something right!
4.What were some of your favorite aspects of Hays Academy of Hair Design and your time in school?
I personally loved the business program that they have in place. I attended FHSU and got a Bachelors degree in Business Marketing which helped me in my time at HAHD but I truly feel that the Nuts and Bolts business program they teach, gives you all the tools you need to run your business when you graduate from HAHD!
I also loved the Celebration Fridays that the school put on each month. On Celebration Fridays, each student who met goals set by the school were recognized and one Business Student of the Month (whichever student has the highest numbers in services and retail for the month) was announced. If I didn’t say that these awards didn’t push me to be busy, to attend school everyday and complete all the assigned tasks I needed to qualify, that would be a lie! I won Business Student of the Month several times as well while as HAHD, which was an amazing feeling!

6.How long have you been there?

7.Are you happy with your decision to enter this wonderful industry?
If I didn’t say that I am extremely happy with my decision, I would be lying!
8.What career goals do you have and what are your plans to achieve them?
I would say two of my career goals are to become one of the top hair color artists as well as top makeup artist in Western, Kansas. I love learning and trying new techniques and staying up on the latest trends by attending workshops and classes so I am able to provide my clients with them!
My other goal is to grow my income from client services by 5% this year! I love having the ability to dictate my own income and raises!
