Graduate Showcase- McKenzi Maska

 Graduate Showcase- McKenzi Maska

Where are you from?

Hays, KS

What was the defining moment in you choosing to attend cosmetology school?

I would go to the salon with my grandma as a little girl and I can remember admiring all the hair stylists.  I knew from early on this is what I was born to do! I’m such a people person, and I love making people feel good about themselves. What better way to do that than becoming a cosmetologist? It’s so much more than hair!

What fears did you have and how did you overcome them?

I’d say my biggest fear was leaving Hays, for 32 years it was my home town, it’s all I knew. I had built a successful clientele there, but in the back of my mind I always knew I wanted more. I had always wanted to move somewhere else, and Kansas City was one of my dreams. But the fear of moving kept me from my dreams for so long, “what if I couldn’t make it in a big city?” “What if I fail?” “Starting over with a new clientele is too hard.” I had a friend send me a quote that said “everything you’ve ever wanted is on the other side of fear”. I remember that night making the decision to move. It was scary, no doubt, but absolutely the best decision I have ever made thus far. The bigger the risk, the bigger the reward. Once you get out of your own way, you truly become unstoppable!

What were some of your favorite aspects of Hays Academy of Hair Design and your time in school?

I loved the family vibe. You truly felt like you were part of a family, and also, the fun!  It’s safe to say I had a blast attending school there! Hays Academy allowed me to become myself, be confident, and be proud of who I am, not only as a stylist, but as a person, and that hasn’t stopped since the day I graduated over 8 years ago! To this day I still consider my instructors and friends from Hays Academy my extended family! It’s rare to have people care about your success as an individual as much as they do, I’m forever grateful for the time I spent there!

Where are you working now?

Salon Savvy in Shawnee, KS

How long have you been there?

7 months now and loving every minute!

Are you happy with your decision to enter this wonderful industry?

Every single day I feel beyond blessed to be in this industry, they say when you find something you love, it doesn’t feel like a job, and I couldn’t agree more! This is so much more than a job, every day I get to be a “daymaker” and that is something that has no price tag.

What career goals do you have and what are your plans to achieve them?

My goals have always been to be the best version of me, and that includes as a stylist. I always aim to give my clients my very best. Continuing education and constantly learning from my peers has been very beneficial for that!
