Graduate Showcase-Helen DeJesus
Helen Dejesus was a phenomenal student. Not only was she on the leadership team, but she was a high producer on our student salon floor. Seeing Helen work her way up in this industry in such a short time has been no surprise for our staff. We knew she was management ready as a graduate. “Helen was always striving for perfection. Even when she had done a great job, she wanted to know what she could have done better. This attribute is so crucial to finding lasting success.”-Instructor Brooke Martens
Helen is now a manager at Sports Clips in Salina! Give her a visit and say you read about her on Hays Academy of Hair Design’s blog!
Graduate Spotlight Questions
1.Where are you from?
I am from Michigan.
2.What was the defining moment in you choosing to attend cosmetology school?
I never planned on doing hair for a career. When I moved to Salina my mom told me to check out HAHD. When I sat down with Krista and she told me about prayers and praises and how faith was important to the school, I knew this is what I needed and what I was supposed to be doing.
3.What fears did you have and how did you overcome them?
My biggest fear was messing up when I first graduated from school. Second guessing myself. Are they going to like my work and can I build a solid clientele? I prayed a lot and listened to God. I was constantly watching videos and reading articles.
4.What were some of your favorite aspects of Hays Academy of Hair Design and your time in school?
The culture of HAHD, Faith and God’s presence throughout. I love that once you graduate from HAHD the support is still there. No matter if it’s a personal situation or just a quick how are you doing, making you feel like you are not alone.
5.Where are you working now?
Sport Clips
6.How long have you been there?
4 months
7.Are you happy with your decision to enter this wonderful industry? Yes best decision I have ever made. This career is so rewarding in so many ways. I get to spend time with different people from all walks of life. For the time I have them in my chair they are equal. They may not have the best life situations when they leave, but for that couple minutes I want them to forget whatever is going on in their life and just relax. When you give someone a good haircut the confidence they instantly get is amazing. I have met people from tv reporters, to councilmen, to military, professional sports athletes all in one day.
8.What career goals do you have and what are your plans to achieve them? I absolutely love my company.
I definitely want to continue to grow and work my way up. My plans are just working hard and making sure that my clients stay number 1 and to continue to provide them excellent service.
