How to Become a Cosmetologist in Kansas
Are you ready to follow your dreams and become a licensed cosmetologist? Well, Kansas is the place to do it! Believe it or not, Kansas has a great beauty scene with plenty of salons and spas. The question still remains, how do you become a cosmetologist in Kansas? Let’s dive into it!
Enroll in A Cosmetology Program
The first step to becoming a cosmetologist in Kansas is to enroll in beauty school and complete a minimum of 1,500 hours of cosmetology training as required by the state. Attending cosmetology school is a great way to learn the latest industry techniques and grow your skills. Some of the things you can learn in Hays Academy of Hair Design’s cosmetology program include:
- Male and Female Haircuts
- Hair Design & the Latest Trends
- Hair Coloring
- Hair Styling
- Thermal Techniques
- Chemical Relaxing and Perms
- Skin Care
- And more!
Picking the right cosmetology school for you is crucial when getting your license because it is where you’re going to learn the majority of the skills you need in order to be successful in the industry. At Hays Academy of Hair Design, your education is important to us and we strive to provide our students with a quality education.
Pass the Kansas Board Cosmetology Exam
After you’ve completed your cosmetology training hours and graduated from beauty school, the next step is to sit for your Kansas Board Cosmetology Exams. These exams consist of a written and written practical portion and you’ll need to pass both in order to receive your license.
In order to take these exams, you must be referred by your beauty school in order to take the online exam. Before taking the exam, it is important to note that you must be at least 17 years of age to sign up for the exam, and at least 80 hours away from the completion of your cosmetology training program. Upon taking the exam, you should have completed your program or schooling requirements.
After you’ve been referred by your school and you’ve paid your exam fees (included in your tuition), you will then receive a voucher that will allow you to schedule a time for you to take the exams. You can expect the exam to cover topics such as:
- Safety and Sanitation
- Implements, Tools, and Equipment
- Chemical and Facility Management
- Hair Care and Product Use
- Skin and Facial Care and Product Use
After you’ve completed your exams, your scores will be ready to view in as little as one week. In order to pass, you must receive a 75% on exams.
Submit an Application for Your License
Once you’ve passed your exams, the next step is to apply for your cosmetology license. In order to obtain your licensure, you’ll need to follow these steps:
-
- Submit your application
- Submit High School Graduation or GED Verification
- Verify Your Training Hours
- Verify Your Passed Exam Scores
- Submit Your Documents
- Pay the $45 Dollar Application Fee
And that’s it! Easy right? After submitting your application and the proper documentation, you’ll officially become a licensed cosmetologist.
Start Looking into Different Opportunities
After you’ve received your license, the final thing to do is start checking out different careers. One of the best things about the beauty industry is that it is ever-changing, meaning there are always opportunities arising. While most cosmetologists work in a salon, a cosmetology license can open a lot of doors for you that go beyond the salon. Regardless of where your license will take you, you’ll now have the opportunity to help people achieve their beauty goals.
