Graduate Spotlight Questions Lizzy Foster

Where are you from?

Colby, KS but currently in St. Francis, KS.

What was the defining moment in you choosing to attend cosmetology school?

I chose cosmetology school because I love people, I love to make people feel confident, I love to socialize. What better way to do what you love by making people feel good and getting to talk and make friends at the same time? I almost didn’t go to cosmetology school, my family was against the idea. But there was something telling me that “this is for you”.  I love that I can be fun and creative.

What fears did you have and how did you overcome them?

6 months into my schooling, I found out I was pregnant with my boyfriend at the time, now soon to be husband. I was sick 90% of the day, every day, but I choose to keep going and not give up. I knew one day that this all would pay off. I was scared, I was scared of being a mom, I was scared to even be in school anymore, I felt like I had lost myself, but with great friends, family, my Hays Academy family and God I overcame my fear of not being good enough for this industry. I have proven to myself in this last year that I can do whatever I put my mind and heart too. I have a beautiful salon that is doing extremely well, I have wonderful clients that I adore, and people who travel to me from different towns over an hour away. My 1 year old daughter cries when we walk by the salon door and we don’t go in. I overcame my fear of being not good enough.  Now don’t get me wrong, I still have a few fears to overcome, but that one is one of my absolute favorites!

What were some of your favorite aspects of Hays Academy of Hair Design and your time in school?

My favorite parts about Hays Academy is how faith based it is, I grew a lot as a person in a short amount of time.

I loved when I got out on the student salon and finally got to socialize with others and make them feel great.

It was so awesome to know that you weren’t just learning the basics, you learned the basics and so much more. They truly set you up with all the tools of success.

Where are you working now?

I Currently own my own salon “ReFined Salon” (Refind yourself) In St. Francis KS.  Before I opened, I was a stay at home mom to my beautiful baby girl.

How long have you been there?

I opened almost 4 months ago. The building we choose came with the house we bought so it needed a lot of remodeling but it has been in the making since January 2017.

Are you happy with your decision to enter this wonderful industry?

Yes, it allows me to be creative and flexible with my work schedule. I love the fact that every day I get to make someone feel even better about themselves. I love the fact that I get to stay home with my one year old daughter as I please and not miss a moment of her growing life.

What are some of the highlights of your career so far?

It’s such an amazing feeling when my family and I go out to eat and people in the restaurant continually tell you how much they love their hair still, or how wonderful it is to have you in their life. I love when I’m able to give back to my community.
